View Full Version : Maybe a Rock Bouncer Build?

JR, Drew, I am starting a new thread for the Rock Bouncer build we talked about last week. Just want to start the discussion, post pictures, and comments. I have been thinking and wishing a bouncer for a long time, just that couldnít get my hands on a nice chase. Drew I thank you in advance helping me on the chase.:emot-worship: After all it all depends on the chase, since that is the only part will be complete custom and I canít buy from the mighty internet.

You have a Wraith with a nasty brushless motor correct? I would call that a rock bouncer.

luenhsing

Yes it does drive like one, but surly it doesn't looks like one:). I think I am forwards to the show time bouncer, and candy red.

Oh, I see what you are wanting now. Just know, fully welded tube rigs are heavy and will not work like your other rigs. That's why you see them being sold off on the forums so often. I admit, they do look stinkin cool though. I'll be checking out this build thread for sure.

Hi, Mr Drew! Are you ready for this. Let me know how you think if this is cool with you?

Thanks,

Drew

I'm definitely down to do it and think I have a few tricks up my sleeve to keep the weight down and still be more than strong enough to drive it like a real rock bouncer.

Have you considered any of the other bouncers out there? I love showtime but there's so many good looking rigs out there it would be hard for me to choose.

Ultrabouncer happens to be my personal favorite
https://fbexternal-a.akamaihd.net/safe_image.php?d=AQC6gc44CRBHQxrD&url=http%3A%2F%2Fi1.ytimg.com%2Fvi%2FG_vme17GxTE%2 Fmaxresdefault.jpg%3Ffeature%3Dog&jq=100

WOD makes a cool looking rig too
http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg25/Sawzall/Temp/IMAG0278.jpg

And I'd always be down for an original design as well.

Just my personal list next time I build myself another rock bouncer cage.

ROC412 3300kv
RX8 gen2
HS7980
Currie axles
Aluminum wheels, probably something SLW
Hand cut RB2's or swampers, probably rb2
Super shafty wraith bomb proof trans, 5mm is probably fine
MIP shafts
Locked Up FI spools
Axial CVDs
Wraith plastic skid since this will be a belly dragger
2x 2100mah 3s 30c lipo in parallel, small enough to hide and more than enough amperage support to keep everything cool

I unfortunately don't have access to a tig any more. I think a good mix of tube and rod will keep it super strong and still fairly light.

Honestly Frank, I don't think a 7955 would be very happy in this nor would it live long. In my experience the rock beasts or even the swampers are sticky enough with the "right" foams and make that servo work really hard. I tried a few and they were all too hot for me to be comfortable. Even with the micro tube chassis I built it still gets rather warm running currie axles and rock beast 2's. It was honestly about as light as a "wraith" is going to get with aluminum axles.

Ok I will take your advise and planning to get the 7980. Ok here is my list, Tekin Pro4 HD 3100kv, Tekin RX8 Gen2, HS7980, Castle BEC, Vanquish Currie front and back (maybe buy it from you?), vanquish links, MotoWorx 2.2LE Spoke Row with Proline TSL, Proline 2 stage shock front and back, RC4WD 2 speed transmission, MIP CVD. And of course the bouncer cage :).

Drew
11-16-2013, 09:56 AM
Sounds good. I'd just hate to see you burn up a $130 servo because it isn't quite up to the task but could be used for something else. I'm going to skip out on driving this weekend so I can get some other projects done and get started on a cage. I sent you a PM as well.

Drew,

Just ordered the parts for the Bouncer, Proline Shock (Slash spec). Proline TSL tire, MotroWorx wheel silver, next ordering the RX8 and the Pro4 HD 3000kv , MIP CVD from TowerHobbies. They have a sale on the RX8 this week. Mayber grab it before it goes off the sale. I think I am only missing the transmission, servo and the Links. Got everyting else.

I think you would be better off with a mmp vs tekin unless your just goin flat out. From what ive read seems lime the dragbrake is better on mmp. Along w a few othe options. Just my 2cents

11-21-2013, 07:40 PM
Would mmp work on pro4 HD? Or should I just get pro4 with mmp? Thanks for the input.

It should. 3 wires and sensor wire. I think the hd is a 550can vs 540. Both will bolt up the same. The motor I had in Jr's honcho at rock the lake was a 550 can brood stumper. Maybe not name it hd but hp bigger horse power!

MMP may be adequate with it I just urge caution since I did blow up mine with a 14lb wraith. This was however with my Novak 550 2 pole 5000kv. I would think a 3000kv 4 pole would be about the same amp draw with the HD 550 can as well.

Frank, I'm working on a couple cage designs for you, I'll send them over this weekend and we can talk about it. Sorry I haven't gotten them to you yet, life is a little crazy this week.

Showtime is a hellova chassis to do! I know some of the builders are charging in upwards of 1400 bucks for show or gamechanger.

Drew, I am curious how you got a wraith up to 14 lb?
And also was wondering how your doing your chassis, weld, braze, solid or tube? If your interested I may be lookin for another chassis and have a ton of ideas! Lmk

If he's ok with it Frank's chassis will be a mix of both solid and tube. Me typing this now will probably be news to him, we're still pretty early in the planning on the chassis.

I've built quite a few chassis in my day using all manners of material 1:1 and RC and while I've done tube and solid RC's I've never done a mix. There's plenty of benefit to both types and a mix should be a good solid compromise. As with anything on these it all comes at a price. A tube chassis is lighter but is not as strong as a solid chassis. Building some of the major load bearing components of the cage from solid will help the cage take a beating with a lot of the braces being tube to reduce weight.

I braze my chassis' now. Unfortunately I no longer have access to a TIG and I don't like mig welding for rc cages. There's just too much labor in the cleanup at the end. A properly fit and brazed chassis is ready for the bead blaster and paint almost immediately after it's done with brazing.

$1400 is crazy for a chassis. I understand there is a lot of work and some people have to make a profession from this. I'm just in this for fun and if I can help out some people locally and build some cool stuff in the process I'm happy. Unfortunately my free time is pretty limited right now so I can really only work on one thing at a time.

the 14lb rig was as follows, I only really call it a "wraith" since that's what the parts were based off of. Unfortunately I didn't finish this cage for a number of reasons. Mostly because I needed to buy all new higher end electronics for it. The servo was taxed heavily and was probably going to blow up before the end of the test run however my MMP let go first. I need to fix the minor tweak in the chassis from a 3ft fall on to it's lid and add a couple more braces to it when I have an opportunity.

Currie axles with HR lockers and axial cvd's
RC4wd predator wheels
Pitbull RB2's
MMP
Hitec 7955
Novak ballistic 550 2 pole 5000kv
All metal trans with HR parts
MIP driveshafts
CC 10A bec
VP links
2x 2100mah 3s lipo in parallel

3/16 solid steel chassis, brazed. Fit to Tamiya FJ40 body. Behind the axle, chassis mounted servo.

Ok got a little lost when you said wraith.lol cant wait to see it come to life!

I think a heavy rig performs more like 1:1 but superlight has its advatages.

What do you use for bending your material? Ive looked at a couple diff benders but they seem cheap and not durrable.

Drew
11-24-2013, 11:54 AM
Yep, heavy rigs definitely drive more "scale".

I use a combo of a few different benders for the tube and rod. I still want to buy a few more benders to increase my capabilites.

I use this one for the bulk of my rod bending, it's makes easy and consistent work of the bends. Bought from O'Reilly
1266

I use this for tubing only although if you can squeeze pretty hard it could probably also do rod. Available from O'Reilly Auto
http://images.oreillyauto.com/parts/img/large/pfm/w80674.jpg

and I use this ring roller from harbor freight for large radii.

Unfortunately I've had a 1:1 project on my plate until yesterday and I haven't been able to devote my full attention to this until now. I'll post plenty of pictures once Frank decides what he likes of the designs I have come up with.

Parts look great. Sorry I haven't been around since my last post. I've been working 10+ hr days since then. I finally got a break and should be able to make some major headway in the next couple days.

I've honestly never looked at the durango shocks but I'm sure they're nice. I just recommended the prolines since I've had multiple sets, one of which has been on 3 different trucks over the past 2.5 years and still have no leaks to date. I don't know of anyones shocks that I can say that about other than these and I've had almost all of them.

The only other parts I can think of at this point is a BEC. That 7980 is going to draw some power.

I just seen this! Nice build, Going to be an awesome rig.

Just trying to help with some input, here is a pic of a chassis that I picked up a few months ago and there was an issue with the front axel clearance. I am going to remove the bottom tube on the chassis in the front to allow full travel of the suspension. Not sure if you have this issue or not just trying to help. The pictures loaded backwards but you can see in the bottom picture where the issue is.
