Hey folks,

Well, it's been a long time coming, but I think I'm finally ready to start on my first Class 2 rig. I've been stock piling a few nice bodies, but have been having a devil of a time figuring out what I want to build. I wanted to use a body I already own. I wanted the rig to be reasonably competitive. And I wanted the body to retain some element of it's original form. I'm drawn to rigs that keep most of their body panels and keep most of their overall shape and profile. In the end, I finally decided on a body to use and also determined what style of rig I'm after. Be forewarned, this may be a slow going build so if you have A.D.D., you may want to look elsewhere. :lol2:

Anyway, the plan is to make my version of the Poison Spyder "King of the Hammers" Jeep JK.

Of course, I will not be building it identically to the 1:1, but I'm taking heavy amounts of inspiration from it. Yeah, rigs like this have been built before, but I don't care. I like it. I'm building it. :flipoff: It will be SCX10 based. In fact, back around last Christmas I was one of the lucky winners in the giveaway RCC was having and I won an SCX10, along with some other great products from RCC vendors. That SCX10 will be the basis for this build.

Here's the overall "rough draft" of the plan for this rig....

Powertrain:
Motivation will either come from a HH13t Crawlmaster Pro or I may opt for a Tekin Pro4 3300kv if I decide to get kookie.
3s batteries, but may consider 4s.
ESC will either be a Tekin FXR or RS Pro.
Dinky R/C's Gr7 transmission and Split Skid will be put to use with HD internals throughout.
Axial axles will be built up, likely with all kinds of Vanquish goodies.

Chassis/Body:
SCX10 rails will form the basis, but there will be plenty of tubework to accompany it.
Roof is coming off and some surgery will be performed on the body, but nothing too drastic since I want to keep it recognizable as a JK.

Wheels/Tires:
Tires are going to be Pit Bulls (they just speak to me!).
Wheels are either going to be Locked Up RC or possibly Vanquish OMF (still up in the air on that one).

So stay tuned and I'll do my best to keep this thread updated with my progress...

Thanks!
Tommy

Thats a killer rig to base a build from Tommy. Knowing you, yours will be every bit as awesome. Ive been mulling over my JK and what I wanted to do with it for next season and this certainly gives me some ideas:thumbsup:

Thanks, man!

One of the few parts I have at the moment is my Delrin Gr7 transmission from Dinky R/C. It utilizes the main gear from an Axial transmission's internals as the "spur". Of course, this means a very small pinion gear is mandatory to get comparable ratios to a stock SCX10 setup. I'm starting off with a 9t pinion because of the high strung nature of the Crawlmaster Pro 13t.

In order to get everthing working, the stub of one output needs to be cut so it won't contact the motor....and only one output is needed anyway. For this "sacrificial" side, I used a stock Axial output.

The other end is an Axial hardened output and it's all wrapped up with a Robinson Racing hardened "spur". Hopefully, it'll be fairly bulletproof.

Here it is all meshed up with the RC4WD 9t pinion. The pinion concerns me because there's so little material there and I suspect the set screw could strip easily. The hole on the other side stripped already.....and very easily.

Another option I have is to use some Hot Racing pinions. But they'll need to be bored deeper or the motor shaft will need to be cut down. This is as far as the pinion will go on the motor shaft. Way too long.

Here's the completed Gr7 ready to be installed.

Tommy,
Call me crazy but I'm thinking Locked Up RC wheels will be best!
:lol2:

Seriously though ... are you sure you cut the stock output and kept the hardened one? ... cause I swear my hardened outputs are dark and my stock ones are lighter...:blah:

I know, I know... :cool2: I'm really torn on the wheels. You know how much I love Trailreadys, but for this build I want something "racier" looking. But who knows what'll happen. Wheel selection is still a ways off. :lol2:

So here's the skinny on Axial outdrives, best I can tell from their site. The stockers are actually steel. I just verified this with my brand new outdrives in my Dingo kit. Maybe original AX10 kits used aluminum?

The bronze colored outdrives are supposedly steel, too. However, they aren't very magnetic so maybe they're stainless and/or the coating they apply is affecting the magnetism. These are much pricier so I can only assume they must be stronger, too. Keep in mind these are counterbored on the backside, unlike the stockers, so that could account for the weight difference.

Not much of an update, but whateva! I'll do what I want!

Got the front axle all built up. RCP stainless locker, Gunnar Beef Toobz, Axial Overdrive gears, Vanquish 8 degree knuckles/C's, and of course the new VVP axles. Team3six Rock lube is all over the ring/pinion and I coated the beef toobz with Corrosion X. Of course, it's got a Hand Bros track bar mount to go with the upcoming chassis mounted servo 'cause what self-respecting scaler would have an axle mounted steering servo? :ror:

Still waiting on some goodies to arrive before I can proceed with the building of the rear axle or chassis. In the meantime, I'm beginning to prep/trim the JK body and remove the paint since it will not be red. I've got other plans...

Wondering if marine greese was an option. If so why did you not use a marine greese?

It is definitely an option and it's what I typically use. But I decided to pick up some Rock Lube from Norm at Team3six 'cause he's a buddy of mine. For all I know, it *is* marine grease. Sure smells like it! :lol2:

Definitely want to keep tabs no this build, especially since I'm a bit of a Poison Spyder fanboy myself. Actually have the same BFH rear bumper on my JK as the KoH rig.

Curious, though. If you're wanting to stay true to that particular rig, why not go with the Mayhem Monster wheels, as that rig appears to be running Raceline Monster beadlocks? That would definitley keep the scale appearance wouldn't it?

Yeah, the Monsters are at the front of the pack with regard to my wheel selection, but I'm not entirely copying this truck. This is merely the inspiration so don't expect it to be a replica or anything. Don't get me wrong, my plan is to have it be pretty darn similar, but I always like to leave myself some "creative liberties" 'cause things don't always transfer well from the real world to 1:10. :lol2:

I got a couple bits in the mail yesterday, but there's still one big piece missing that I'm still waiting on. Should have more updates soon, I hope!

So while I'm waiting on goodies, I figured I can do some mods to the body. What the heck am I thinking? These things sells for real money these days! Actually, I haven't really cut much off, but that's about to change once I get a rolling chassis.

The razor saw did a great job. I even salvaged the flares in case I ever want to use these things on something else one day.

Yep! Hopefully, the t-case/skid combos will be shipping out this week. That's what is really holding me up at the moment....

Nope! The machinist for Dinky R/C screwed up the last batch and is now giving Matt (of Dinky) a hard time about standing behind his work. So Matt is evidently looking for a new machinist. At this point, there's no telling how much longer it'll be.

That's why this build is currently on hold and I'm re-doing my Class 1 rig for the time being.
