First I got say big thanks to BOWTIE for getting me the motor plate, outputs, cab. Thanks again Vato!"thumbsup"

I started with putting a order into RPP hobbies from scx frame, axial trans case. The axles were already built from Honcho #1

Once I got the stuff to build the trans I put all the goodies to beef up the stock transmission.

I contacted Dave @ DH fab after seeing a custom flatbed for honcho for sale. I knew had to have one.

Once I got the frame and bed and sliders from Dave I got it into roller.

Bout time we see this awesome piece of Portal power beauty on here. I know you have a some pics of the front steering setup on the other site but would mind taking one or two more, a little closer in on how the drag link is attached to the steering bar (one from wheel to wheel)?

I know I know. I been meaning to do a thread over here, then RCC went down.

Yes I can get more detailed pics of my steering setup. Although I'm thinking about making new steering setup.

Great minds think alike I guess because I have something really similar to those being cut at the machine shop right now.

One issue we came across is the lug spacing and the hex area on the back.
Did you drill/tap through or cut the screws really short?

If you did 2mm or 2-56 bolts you should be able to fit 8 of them for the hub.

Mine are drilled and tapped 4-40x.5 bolts.

I ordered hot racing spools and avid bearings. I have not touch the inners of axles since 2010!

Figured with 2 years of runs they would look nasty and seized up bearings. None of the bearing were and the diff didn't look too bad.

I ran into issue with one the spools I couldn't get the shaft to sit all the way. I sent it off to MThead and he fixed it, also sent me some replace beadlock rings. I will get rear axle button up hopefully tomorrow.

No, I'm going to have to shave the ring gear. Then I will glue some lexan to bottom.

doesnt the pinion gear use the full width of the ring gear when it meshes?
doesnt seem like much teeth left if you remove half the diameter of the ring teeth.

There wont be much left of the ring gear. But I think it be ok, it doesn't need full contact anyways. Aleast how that I feel about it. I seen and spoken to the gent. that has done this mod and been working good for him.

Hey Eric do you know where I can get a set of portals. And I did something similar to my wraith axles on shaving them. I also used the 36/14 gears as the ring gear is .100 smaller in diameter. I just took an 1/8" off my housings.

And the soon to be finished Titan 60 axles. Think the portals would send them over the top.

I remember you talking about wanting to add portals back at Eddie's last G6.

Noone makes portals for 8* knuckles or wraith axles. If they did, I would start narrowing my wraith axles down and add portals to them under the taco. SDS cumtomz is going to be making portals for 8* for project he is doing. But I wouldn't count on it being put in production.

I saw your axles on RCC, They are pretty! Are those TLT mounts ? I tried to tig weld one to my scx frame, found out that they chromed dipped brass I do believe. It did funky stuff while I was welding it.

Wish I could find someone to machine new cases for 8* knuckles.

angryone
02-29-2012, 01:47 PM
They are tlt mounts but are definitely steel. Jerry is handling welding duties over @ DMG, and said he had concerns too, but would make new mounts if he had to.
8* knuckles? I'm confused. Adapting them to fit my axles is no problem for me. Is it? Am I missin something as to what's involved? I thought they just bolted onto the ax-10 housings and that was it.

The 3racing portals are for ax/scx10 axles. If you look at the ax axle head on and draw straight line thur the king pins it 0*.

If looking at the wraith axles straight on and draw line thur the king pins they tilted 8* in. You would have to make new portal cases.

That's definitely a wicked axle mod! I'm thinking of getting either my Honcho or CC-01 with 3racing portal axles as well. How's the build quality of the portal cases and gears?

I'm running 3s and 4s on the Honcho and 2s in the CC-01. Just haven't modded the axles yet until someone chimes in on their reliability.

Thanks!

The 3racing portals are ok. I upgraded the pins and to ball bearings. New stub shafts. I also shimmed the gears. I been running on 4s and been good so far.

If you go with CC-01 is alot to be $$$ for the portals. You have to buy 2 different sets of portals. But you will have wicked cool little rig.

I know been slacking on the updates, I moved and need to clean up the garage and get my work bench setup. I need to get this ready for ECC and maybe this upcoming comp.

I been needing to get bunch of misc. little mods done.

I painted up a new cab. I wanted to do color out the norm for me. I need to reforce the back of the cab, install side mirrors and get it stickered up.

Any suggestions ?

A deal came up and couldn't pass it up. I bought dezfan mog body set and rc4wd hummer wheels with proline swampers. First thing was get my bench cleaned up.

I ordered new axle cases, new HD axial gears for the rear, axial driveshafts.

It not done not, I need to get eletricronics laid out, rewire the motor, shorten the rear links.
