well maybe not the ultimate, but it will be running rc4wd "ultimate scale axles"
http://img134.imageshack.us/img134/4559/yotaaxles3pq9.jpg

had this project in the works for quite some time, and got alot left ahead of me.
cut the chassis a few months ago, and its been on the patio growing character....
http://img146.imageshack.us/img146/1384/rustychassisjr4.jpg

in the mean time i started on the body work. the first cut. of course you wont see me building a yota or ford truggy :D i bought this body from runnin2jeep nearly a year ago.
http://img362.imageshack.us/img362/6259/cutbodymc7.jpg

then cut out the hood slices to narrow the front end. then notched the fender tops and heated them up so it would hold its shape.
http://img146.imageshack.us/img146/9790/hoodsliceszz8.jpg

with the fenders pulled in of course the hood was too long, i needed to remove exactly 1/8"
http://img146.imageshack.us/img146/9426/remove18go7.jpg

i removed the 1/8" and glued the leading edge of the hood back on, fit so good i didnt even need filler, also glued the fenders back to the hood.
http://img58.imageshack.us/img58/9840/gluenosetogetherzk1.jpg

then i re-enforced all the joints with some .060 styrene
http://img146.imageshack.us/img146/8735/reenforceundersidexm1.jpg

got the chassis mocked up, and the tube work plans done and printed for bend patterns. it will be a removeable bolt on cage, in the lower left side view you can see the mount tabs.
http://img146.imageshack.us/img146/6418/planslt0.jpg

new hood, to cover the blower hole.
http://img146.imageshack.us/img146/8512/newhoodfh3.jpg

not sure what wheels yet, but probly a set of hummer wheels with TSS Faux lox rings
http://img146.imageshack.us/img146/3685/hummerwheelsloxcx9.jpg

made a set of link and shock mounts
http://img362.imageshack.us/img362/3783/linkmountsjk8.jpg

until i get the motor mounted and situated for the atlas t-case(already preordered), im gonna run a axle mounted servo :( only until i see what room ive got to work with for the frame mount servo. heres the mount i made.
http://img58.imageshack.us/img58/401/servomountke9.jpg
http://www.tracgear.com/product/rc4wd/truck/Tundra/g1/atlas2.jpg

heres the mount tabs and braising jig for the tube rear upper link mounts
http://img58.imageshack.us/img58/1848/tubeupperlinkbracketsum2.jpg

and heres the narrowed steel grill i made. with buckets to match. just have to put the clod grill bend in it, and braise some mount tabs on to it the off to the patio it goes :D
http://img362.imageshack.us/img362/8425/grillbucketsky2.jpg

LOOOTS of work left....

well i found myself with just no time these last few weeks, and not getting a chance to braise up the cage. so i decided to outsource. :D after seeing some killer work from him, i contacted Matt(crawlin coles). i had finally got to meet matt at the scale nats and he was one of the coolest guys there not to mention a fellow bowtie lover. so after seeing his skillz i knew he was the one for the job. i shipped off a box with CAD plans, the chassis, and mount tabs already waterjetted for him. update time!

i like how the front bar is further outside of the stinger, and that its not outrageously huge.

STANG KILLA SS
10-17-2008, 09:20 PM
you mean like those jeeps with the stinger to roof top? so rediculous. only guys that need stingers taller than the hood imo, are those icelandic offroaders that have to span/cross those 4' gaps in the ice that are like 40 feet deep.

thanks see ya tommorrow.

cage work is done and bolted on, came out awesome. time to set it outside and let her get nice and rusty....

got the half doors, well... half done...
http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/4601/halfdoors50wo5.jpg

braised up a upper link bar for the rear. came out sweet, bolted it up along with the 4 link mounts i made earlier, the mounting positions are an exact match to TLT mount points so all my cad work will transfer right over for chassis designs, and link/shock length calculations.

well shes a roller now. even though i had already made a sweet mount, i decided against the axle mounted servo, and will be doing frame mount. so i braised up another 4 link mount. i never realized until i was bolting it on, that the front pumkin is offset, youd think if you blew $400 bucks on a set of axles youd pay more attention. anyway i also got a set of the new 1.9 tomahawk tires, i think there gonna be the ticket, i REALLY like what i see so far. next up i gotta get the steel sleeves made for the links and set them outside to rust.....

this thing is simply amazing. are you going to "rust" the transfer case and skid plate as well? i think i like the ribbing that you put on the back of the cab the best. you have more patience than me.

STANG KILLA SS
02-18-2009, 10:27 AM
yeah ill paint the skid for sure, not sure about the t-case. cause future builds may not need rust. :D
thanks man. its been slow going for sure.

Tommy R
02-18-2009, 10:41 AM
I wouldn't "rust" the t-case. Atlas' are made of aluminum anyway. You could oxidize it, I suppose, but given how hidden it is and that t-cases in 1:1 rigs are pretty hidden from damage and the elements, I wouldn't sweat it and would leave it as-is. :)

STANG KILLA SS

Cory, what battery are thinking about running? Now that I converted to lipo, I want to know how big a batt I need for the May 2nd comp. Running an axial trans/tlt axles, fxr, 45t integy lathe motor, rig is right at 5lbs. I dont expect exact numbers, just a guestimate...like 1500mah or maybe 2000mah...

the tires seemed still a bit stiff, and although it never wanted to roll, it seemed like it was on the brink of being tipsy. so on my lunch break i went with a softer foam setup and added 1oz to each rear wheel and 1/4 oz to each front (all there was room for). total rig weight now tips the scales at 6lbs 12oz.
i had also previously lowered the holmes hold on the HH BR-XL from 100% to 80% but it seems like its still wanting to do stopies on down lines so im gonna try 50-60%.

cant wait to try this thing out at the comp saturday!

well i started soldering up a LED kit for the truck today. and i just didnt like where it was going with the white LEDs. with the super white/blue tint they looked like Lexus HIDs or something just didnt fit the build. then i remembered these TINY 12v filament bulbs that i think i got from 1badjeepbruiser 3-4 years ago. they give off a nice yellowy halogen light, perfect for this build. wired them up with the LED tails and shes ready for night action!

Cory you could flip the tire inside out and sand down the middle rib, that will make them soft and also you could sipe the lugs.

well last week i gave the front end of this truck some love with a CMS.
im embarassed to say i had never done a CMS before so there was a bit to be learned but the end result came out really well with 0 bump steer and hardly any axle swing.
http://img832.imageshack.us/img832/9548/cms1.jpg

well this week i decided to do some work on the rear.
http://img703.imageshack.us/img703/4706/rearredo1.jpg

installed underdrive gears in the rear
changed to 60wt oil in the rear shocks
and extended the rear links 3/8"
im not sure i really care for the look of the longer rear. im not sure ill keep it. :( i just figured with the tighter turning of the UD gears i could get away the slightly longer WB.

available here:
http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/vendors-tires-wheels/405955-~tss~-scale-1-9-chameleon-beadlocks-vp-slws-2n1-looks-free-scale-hubs.html

i used MThead rings, and VP 350 SLW hexes. the 350s widened the overall track by .3" over the steelies. ill probly go to VP 225 hexes to narrow it back down to where it was.
i also got to get out and do some serious crawling with Steve from LURC over the weekend. 5-6 hours straight non stop, 160 gates, super scale no touch trail run, buddy style. it was pretty damn awesome.

Wheels look good Cory!

STANG KILLA SS
03-28-2013, 06:00 PM
well ive been running this truck for awhile now and decided to make some updates.

Phase 1: Wheels and Tires.
loved my Chameleons. but i wanted the rust back:mrgreen: so grabed the old steelies. but updated them with new rc4wd rotor hubs. these add the brakes obviously but also get rid of the pin mount and go to hex. they are also threaded instead of just threw holes like the stock ones that used and screw threw them and a nut on the outside. they were a huge pain.
also was sick of the widea$$ iroks. skinniest tire i could find in a modern compound was the 1.55 X2SS claws so i went with them. love the look and no bulging on the 1.9.
http://img580.imageshack.us/img580/1493/brakehex1.jpg

the new threaded hex brake hubs also allowed me to ditch the threw bolts/nuts and go to scale hardware. looks better and way easier assembly.
http://img163.imageshack.us/img163/6233/brakehex2.jpg

here you can see the difference between the old 1.9 Iroks and the new 1.55 claws.
huge scale improvement width wise, and ive always liked the looks of the claws.
http://img833.imageshack.us/img833/8788/clawsvsiroks.jpg

Phase 2: Diet and True Truggy.
got the rear striped down and now just need to strip the front. complete redo to hopefully drop 1 to 1.5 lbs. will also be doing a true truggy chassis, getting rid of the current "tube bed" setup and rails.
http://img189.imageshack.us/img189/301/stripdown.jpg

sgtsteve

I would be curious to see how those claws look next to the 1.9 MTZ's. Maybe at our next comp we can compare (April 13th - reminder). I hear ya on putting the rig on a diet. I finally cut the sliders off the H2 and lost 1/3 of a lb.

STANG KILLA SS
04-01-2013, 05:43 PM
first thing i did to drop weight was aluminum truggy rails, vs steel full rails.
HUGE drop in weight :eek2: , i was pleasantly suprised
http://img593.imageshack.us/img593/1166/railweights.jpg

i brazed some bed and shock mounts added to the tube work, and mocked up the chassis"thumbsup"

got some more done, shes a roller

http://img32.imageshack.us/img32/4315/alumroller1.jpg

swapped the steering servo over to the proper "scale" driver side (Tommy R pointed out) and i also found some VP zero ackerman knuckles i didnt know i had. now getting 45* on the inside and 50* on the outside tire. i think i had about 35 before with the VP standard knuckles.
http://img580.imageshack.us/img580/8899/alumroller2.jpg

heres the part i wasnt expecting and was disappointed in.
it looks like a swamp buggy now. tall and wide with pizza cutters.
its actually narrower 9.0" track than the chameleon/irok combo (9.1" track)
i think its the combination of the pinch and skinnys. i wanted a narrower/tucked look. its not as tall as the pics make it look. ive only got 1/2" of tire to fender clearance at rest.

looking for honest opinions. does it look like a swamp buggy?, or am i over reacting and just used to the wide iroks?

Welcome to the 21st century of steering dynamics:mrgreen: Man, these coulple years have been leaps in advancements for you..hahaha. Anyway, improved steering will be great to have, gonna love it. As for the swamp buggy look, looking at it from the front, where you really show the skinniness of those tires, yeah, its kinda swampy. However, a profile shot it would look nothing like a swamp thing. I think if all that sways you is the tire choice, complete the body/chassis then try out the different tires. Overall, I think your looking into it too much. As a whole, it doenst look like a swamp buggy:thumbsup:

Cory, it looks good with skinnier tires. Liking the changes! Keep it up.

thanks guys!

got the front end finalized i think.
started by going to droop and lowering the front 1/2". removed the short spring, and swaped to 80wt oil (might swap again to 60wt).

then i got to looking at my previous steering setup and realized it was actually draging the sidewall even with no tire deformation. so i had to do something.

ended up moving everything over to the inner arm holes to gain some, then moved the steering link to under the arm. also went to a bent tierod. made it a bit short to give a bit of toe in. this gives the illusion of a narrower track when viewed from the front.
this helped everything exept bump steer. with so much angle and droop its got quiet a bit now. but everything else the changes helped.

got a good 1/8" clearance everywhere now

Cory, try taking the drag link to the top of the knuckle, it might get rid of the bump steer and be more parallel to pan hard link.

huge thanks eric, that would definatly help. sadly i just dont have the room. it would rub the tire again. thats where it was before.
ive got it mostly sorted but getting a weird thing at full droop. the shock on the driveshaft/short side wont fully extend. i think the DS are actually maxing out at full droop. im playing with clocking/pinion angle to see if my hunch is right. i dont have any other ideas what could cause this. i can actually get that side to fully droop, but only when i LIFT the opposite side. if the other (long) side is fully droop, the short/DS side wont fully droop stops about 1/4" short.

Take the driveshaft off the at the axle and droop it out. It might be links or panhard link might need to be longer.

i made the 3 link bar longer and it definatly helped. the DS side drooped ALMOST to full extention. but it created so many other problems i put the shorter one back on. i will try removing the DS, not sure why i didnt think of that. thanks.

also i revisited your suggestion on moving the steering rod back on top of the knuckle arm. i got it to work! by going to a button head and putting the nut on the bottom instead of top, i got it all to fit and maintain my 1/8" clearance. HUGE help. got rid of nearly all my bump steer (it was a LOT with it below) very minimal now. thanks!

Good to hear! I always try and run button heads with the steering.

What else do you have to do to get it going ?

I been slowly working on the Jeep.

Is Belton getting pelted with rain like Austin is? If so, I may need to waterproof the LJ before tomorrow's event! :eek2:

It was but its not now. There will be puddles out there but if I recall there should be plenty of dry area to run on in case someone isnt waterproofed. Looking at the future radar we should be good to go as well, no rain north of Austin during the day:thumbsup:

dad had great luck with Corrosion X in his race boats, but ive never had much faith in chemical waterproofers. always prefered a more physical means.

i de-cased the BRXL and sprayed two thick coats of Plasti-dip from a rattle can. basically Rhino lined it.
then i just superglued the board back to the lower case half to have a smooth/slick surface to use to double side tape it to the chassis, or servo in this case. always had the idea, but just now trying it.
