During MSD nats I got a chance to have dinner with Tom @ RC4WD. He explained to me that he has a ton of parts, but no time to build things. So after a short conversation I agreed to build a truck for him. I'm pretty excited about doing this build because he sent me a ton of cool parts that I have not had a chance to work with before. I'm also planning my own JK build but do not have the funds for it yet. So I figure this will be a good way for me to occupy myself (not buy stuff I can't afford yet) and help out a buddy at the same time.

Fast forward to this morning when I found a box waiting on my doorstep (late night playing Forza with Steve).:mrgreen:

I opened it to find the following...
New Bright Jeep JK body
RC4WD K44 axles with ARB covers, 4 link mounts and wideners.
RCModelex Chassis
Holmes Handwound 45t
RC4WD R2 tranny
RC4WD 1.9 Baja Claws
RC4WD Crisis Wheels
RC4WD Tough Armor side bars
RC4WD 90mm dual spring piggy back shocks
Castle Creations Mamba Max
Castle Creations 10A BEC
Hitec HS-645MG servo
RC4WD Bulldog winch with remote
RC4WD shovel, ice chest, Pull Pal, sand ladders, jerry can and a snorkel!

Just by eyeballing I think using the R2 tranny will make mounting the interior pretty easy. I'm not even sure I'll need to modify the interior at all other than for the rear shock towers ... but we'll see. The chassis was made for the body and I think it will work great.

It will be fully waterproofed using a similar setup as my H2.

I'm also planning on a new paint scheme for it and I'm thinking of a classic cream/pearl color:

Iíll get some mock up pictures to you guys asap but with TSF this weekend I probably won't have a chance to work on this till next weekend.

If I recall, using the R2 tranny will not require any interior cutting. I had originally planned to used the R2 and had tested the fit, should be good.

As you can see, this is going to look bad arse with those wheels and tires.

I also talked him into going with an FXR over the older mamba. It will be smaller and easier to fit in the waterproof box.

He is planning on using zippy 2200mah packs which is great because I already have some I can use to mock things up.

I got another package from Tom with an FXR, spare tire, wheel, rear carrier, etc, etc. So the mocking up begins...

I got the body and the sliders mounted. I ended up bending the sliders down a bit so I could get the body lower onto the chassis. It will look better from the sides (no huge chunks of frame hanging down) but I also had to do this because of the way the front grill was trimmed.... didn't want a bunch of space there.

I opted to use the body mounts that the frame provides rather than my usual convoluted body mount setup. This will be much easier now and in the future. Up front I have some little pieces of foam to help provide some give for the body because I expect it will take some abuse. In the rear, the mount holes go right through the bumper. We'll have to see how that pans out with the tire carrier I was sent but for now it is working.

I have some temp links on the front axle just so I could measure for the electronics box, shocks, etc. The shocks are a little short. They are at max droop in the pics. If Tom has longer shocks I'll use those up front. If not I'll get some longer shock shafts, springs and run some bump stops up front. Rear may be OK with the shorter shocks because I trimmed down the towers back there. I could have trimmed the interior and used the towers but because I have a bunch of accessories to go back there I think this will work best. Plus the less weight in the rear the better.

We got a roller.

Finished the rear links, got the servo installed and started on the front 3 link.

You can see in the last pics that I need to countersink the screws for the servo because they poke up and stop the body from dropping into place.

I'll go back and make better tracbar brackets when I get a chance but this at least get's it mobile and I'm sure there will be a lot of fine tuning/tweeking as things move along.

I decided to tackle the rear bumper/carrier today and I think it came out very, very well.

To get the bumper on I cut up the back portion of the frame to slide it on. I could not leave the original cross member because the bumper brackets were the same width as the frame so it would not go on. After a few cuts I was able to mock it up and drill some new holes in the frame to lock it down.

I still need to trim the excess bracket off but so far so good. It's tucked up as tight as I could get it

I also flushed the servo screws and got the winch mounted up.

Finally making some more progress on this one....:brickwall:

Got the rear bumper trimmed up underneath so it doesn't hang on stuff.

I also squeezed the electronics into my standard box.
Tom sent me an FXR Pro which is a little taller than a regular FXR ... and that speky RX is a fat boy as well so things were a little tighter than I hoped. I ended up having to put his winch RX in a sealed balloon but I think it will be nice and water tight when all is said and done.


I'm gonna try to get everything secured tonight and start on the new rear body mounts.

More updates!

I got the body mounts finished and got to finally work on the suspension mounts. The biggest issue I was having with this build so far is the trackbar mounts. I just was not happy with they way things were going. I must have rebuild the brackets 4 times when I remembered something I saw a long time ago on Jeepforum.com. Ine of the members (I think it was Blaine) had built the trackbar mount out near the C so he could run a long drag link and ditch the stock inverted Y steering linkage. It worked a lot better in the 1:1 world so I decided to give it a go on Tom's JK and I'm pretty happy with it.

I did still have to bend up the trackbar and draglink for the sake of the rod ends but it's doable in a 1:10. They are the same length and parallel, which is what you want on a 3 link....

The next battle was the cage. Because Tom had said he plan on competing with this truck, I wanted to keep it light but high scoring (SORRCA). So I decided to mount the cage to the interior and the body, so that they will all work as one to give it some strength. This also makes the body easy to remove and the top still works fine. No finished pics but here it is hanging in the paint dry area.:mrgreen:

Awesome work Patrick. Would you mind getting some pics up of how you attached the cage to the body and your track bar mount. Im starting get the itch to redo some parts of my JK and need some ideas?

How could it take me this long to build this?

I dunno....
But between my day job, night job and beating Steve at Forza there isn't much time.

Today I got some time to do some body work. Sanding ... lots of sandng. My fingers actually hurt from all the sanding.

But it will be worth it in the end because "hopefully" when Tom runs this thing and scratches it up it will show the gray underbody (which kind of looks like primer) and not the original red paint.

Now I just need to let the filler dry, resand it and then lay some primer & paint!

Dang, your slow in Forza and in building this truck, whats next??? Seriously though, thats a ton of prep work, it will be worth it though:thumbsup:

to help the primer color show better after scratches (and not go all the way to the plastic color)
lay down a couple coats of clear over the primer or silver before laying down the final color.
this will make the thin final color easier to scratch, and much harder to get to plastic color because it has to go threw the clear and primer.

I've been working on the paint a lot .... or should I say the paint prep.

To pull off the original paint I got pretty frisky with the sand paper (overly frisky) and I've been going back over the whole vehicle smoothing it out. Ever block sand a 1:10 vehicle .... not as much fun as you'd think! :lol2:

I'm getting closer though and I do hope to have it painted soon.

Tom also sent me some new Punisher II driveshafts and I'm pretty impressed with them.

SO ... the pics...
I'm on round 3 or so of primer/sand/fill/sand ... dust is gonna kill me I'm sure!

It's Rust-Oleum ultra cover from Home Depot. Says it bonds to plastic.

Lots of painting this weekend!

I initially wanted to go with a nice pearly white for Tom's JK. However, I was having issues getting the white to stick right and after I exhausted the supply at Hobbytown I decided I'd better try a color I could see better when wet.

So, I bought a crap ton of blues to try out because ... I like blue. :wink:

After a few back & forth issues with sanding and priming, I was finally happy with the base coat of primer ... smooth enough to not be scratched up but rough enough to take paint well.

I'm at the same point with this one that I am with my TF2. Do I go for the wet sand & smoother look or leave it a little orangepeely to help hide scratches. Decisions, Decisions ...

I went ahead and did a few more coats of clear and sanding. Hopefully the body color can stand some abuse now!

I also got the exterior accessories and the roof done with some flat black. It's starting to look like a jeep again!

I'm going to let the clear coats fully cure and will reassemble it this coming weekend. Then it's just the final pics for yall and shipping to Tom.

Got the figure & light buckets back in and I really love the way it came out!



My only concern at this point it shipping it. I'll probably send the body and chassis separately because I hate to think what it will go through in the mail!:eek2:
